When the heat sets in, as it has done again across Essex and Suffolk this week, the instinct is to shut everything up and hide from it. Often, the better move is the opposite: open the house up properly and let the air move through.
Patio doors are one of the simplest ways to do that. Unlike a single opening window, a full-width patio door lets you turn a whole wall into an airway. Open one at each end of the house, front and back, or a patio door opposite an opening window, and you create a through-draught that shifts warm air out far more effectively than any single window can on its own.
Why patio doors work harder in a heatwave
- Wide opening span: a sliding patio door gives you a substantially larger opening than a standard casement window, so more air moves through in the same amount of time.
- Cross-ventilation: positioned opposite another door or window, patio doors create a clear path for air to travel through the house rather than just in and out of one room.

- Easy to open fully: sliding and gliding patio doors are designed for effortless, one-handed operation, so opening the house up properly is no more effort than opening a window.
Patio doors also suit rooms where a bifold’s larger footprint or price point isn’t the right fit, kitchens, dining rooms and smaller extensions where a clean, uninterrupted view of the garden matters as much as the opening itself.
Bigger ideas: rethink the opening, not just the door
It doesn’t have to be a straight swap. If your lounge has a window that’s never quite pulled its weight and is too high for you to actually see your garden when seated, then it can be a good candidate for a full patio door instead. Because every door we fit is made to measure, the opening can be extended to suit the room, turning an ordinary window opening into one that gives you direct access onto the garden and genuinely transforming how the room is used.
The same idea works upstairs. Replacing a bedroom window that looks over the garden with a patio door, or inward-opening French doors, and a Juliet balcony brings in far more light and a proper view. On a warm night, open it right up to let the breeze move through the room while you sleep. It’s a lovely upgrade for a garden-facing bedroom, and again, built to fit the space rather than the other way round so you can have your morning cuppa in bed whilst enjoying the view!
