May is the month most people start thinking seriously about it. The garden looks great, the weather is improving, and the idea of a wide opening that brings the two together is suddenly very appealing. But which type of door should you choose?
Bifold and sliding patio doors are both excellent options, but they suit different homes and different ways of living. Here is what you need to know before you decide.
What is the difference?
Bifold doors work in a concertina action, with panels that fold back on themselves and stack neatly to one side of the frame. When fully open, you get a very wide, largely unobstructed span. Sliding patio doors glide on a track, with one or more panels sliding behind each other. They do not require any swing space and tend to have a cleaner, more minimal look.
Comparing Bi-folds to Patio Doors
Opening width vs the view when closed
When it comes to the open position, bifold doors have the clear advantage. When the panels are folded right back, the gap is close to the full width of the frame. With sliding doors, at least one panel is always in a fixed position, so the opening is typically around half the total width.
But there is another side to this worth knowing. When closed, bifold doors have more vertical sections between the panels than a patio door of the same size. A large patio door typically has just one slim central section, whereas a three-panel bifold will have two. The result is that patio doors can actually give you a cleaner, more unobstructed view of the garden when the doors are closed.
So it comes down to what matters most to you: maximum opening width, or the best view through the glass on a chilly evening?
Style
Bifold doors have a bold, architectural quality. They work well in contemporary extensions, kitchen-diners and garden rooms where the goal is a dramatic connection between inside and outside. Sliding patio doors tend to feel more refined, and can work across a wider range of property styles, from more traditional homes to modern builds.
Neither is definitively “better” on style. It comes down to your home, your garden layout, and how you want the space to feel.
What about space?
Sliding patio doors need almost no extra space. They move along a track within the frame and do not extend into the room or onto the patio when open. Bifold doors need a little room for the panels to fold and stack, both inside and outside. If you have a narrow patio or limited floor space on the inside, this is worth factoring in.
Frames and finishes
Both styles are available in aluminium and uPVC. Aluminium tends to be the popular choice for bifold and patio doors because it allows slimmer frames, a wider colour range, and a more contemporary look. uPVC is available too and can be a good option where budget is a key consideration.
For aluminium doors, the frame uses a thermally broken construction, which means there is an insulating barrier built into the profile that helps reduce heat transfer. This makes a meaningful difference to thermal performance without compromising on the slim sightlines aluminium is known for.
Which should you choose?
If you want the widest possible opening and love the drama of a full wall of glass on a sunny day, bifold doors are the one to explore. If the view through the glass matters as much when the doors are closed as when they are open, sliding patio doors have a genuine advantage: fewer mullions, slimmer sightlines, and a cleaner outlook all year round.
